JANUARY
2009
Friday
- Sunday January 2 - 4 Annual
Holiday Party at McKinney Falls State Park
Hey Wonder
Women of TOWN-Austin! Make your reservations now
for the TOWN-Austin Holiday Party. Check this site
for park details http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/mckinney_falls/ The
park includes an interpretive hiking trail, approximately
3/4 mile long; 3.5 miles of paved trails; 4 miles
of multi-use trails for hiking and mountain biking;
and an interpretive center with an exhibit room.
Family members including the family canines are included in this invitation.
Car entry fee for the day is $5.
Pet guidelines – dogs must
be leashed and under your control all the time. They
cannot be left alone at a camp site. They are not
allowed in the buildings.
Visit this website to reserve a tent or RV spot. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/business/park_reservations/ I
have the best luck calling the reservation center (512-389-8900) and leaving
a message for a call back.
I have
a reservation to camp in the rv area for Friday and
Saturday evenings. I hope a bunch of you will join
me. We can add at least one tent to each rv site.
Extra cars in the camping area must park at the restrooms.
I will arrive early on January 2nd to set up camp. We would like to camp together.
I will post site numbers in the headquarters, so look for that as you sign-in
to camp.
If you don’t want to stay in a tent and don’t have a RV, consider
contacting JudyD who has
reserved a screened shelter with bunks. She will priced the bunks at $8 / night.
You will need to provide your own bedding as the bunks do not have mattresses.
Saturday am – let’s
plan to hike and geocache. We set times when
folks respond.
Saturday afternoon – let’s bike. If folks
want to hike some more, that’s great too. Same thing on the times.
We will do some hiking, biking, geocaching, and whatever other trouble we can
create.
I have reserved the dining hall for both Friday and Saturday. Recall that alcoholic
beverages are not allowed in the state park. If by chance the weather is does
not cooperate, we can still have our party and gift exchange since we have
the dining hall. There is lots of parking area at the dining hall if you want
to join us for just the Saturday evening dinner and party. The kitchen has
a large refrigerator and stove. No microwave.
Friday night - bring your own
dinner and games to play in the dining hall.
Saturday - we will hold our
traditional pot-luck dinner and White Elephant
Exchange. Helen and Jill have volunteered
to cook hot dogs and hamburgers again. We
need folks to provide a camping stove to cook
the burgers and hot dogs. Why? Due to the
current burn ban, we cannot cook outside using
the existing grills.
Please RSVP
to Jacque so
we will know how much of everything we need to provide.
Please include any questions I have failed to answer.
It would be really helpful if you tell me: how many
folks are attending any kids; will you be hiking;
will you be biking.

Sunday
January 25 Celebrating
Our Outing Leaders! 1:30 pmJoin
us for an IMAX movie and dinner.
TOWN-Austin is
hosting this event to thank those individuals who
led outings for our membership during 2008. Without
these folks – well, what would we do and where
would we be?
At 1:30 meet at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and we’ll
watch the IMAX movie Wild Sea: 3D. Movie runs from 2 – 2:45pm.
Location link for the museum is http://www.thestoryoftexas.com/special/location.html
Movie details are at http://www.thestoryoftexas.com/showtimes/wild_ocean_3d.html
Following the movie we will adjourn to the Hula Hut for a late lunch/early
dinner. TOWN-Austin will not pay for alcohol, so please plan accordingly.
If you plan to attend (either or both events), please email me. We (Janet and
I) need to purchase IMAX tickets early (for our group rate) so your response
definitely helps us with planning. We will also be making a reservation at
Hula Hut. Contact Jacque.
Tuesday
January 27 Monthly Meeting 6:00 pm
Pizza snacks at 6PM, followed by our short business meeting beginning at 6:30pm
in conference room 225 of the new LCRA Redbud Center. Ashley
Matthews of TPWD and specifically BOW (Becoming

activities. You will enjoy Ashley's great personality and enthusiam for her
job. Join us!
Saturday
January 31 Bird
Island Kayaking & Dinner 3:30-
7:30 p.m. Any
TOWN women and men and children. Dogs will not
be allowed in the restaurant. NOTE:
This outing may be postponed due to cold weather.
We will
meet at "Town Lake Park," (not sure if
that is the official name) at the end of Nash Hernandez
St. in East Austin. This parking lot has a nice boat
ramp into Lady Bird Lake. (Directions are below.)
We will put in at that boat ramp by 3:45 pm or 4:00 pm and paddle down toward
Bird Island. We will explore the edges of Bird Island as birds come home to
roost for the evening. According to Audubon folks, we should see some birds
in January. Some of our birding people can get us excited about what we might
see. Around 5:15 pm we will paddle the short way back to our put-in site, load
up our kayaks, and proceed to Juan-in-a-Million for an excellent Mexican dinner
at 6:00 pm.
Bring: Kayak
and locking device, PFD, paddle, drinking water,
change of clothes (just in case!), dinner money,
binoculars, bird books
Options: You
could park at the Town Lake Holiday Inn and do the
longer paddle to get to our departure point and back.
Concerns: Lock
your kayak on/in your car when we are done, then
drive your car to the restaurant. I do not know the
safety of your vehicle at the park after dark. If
you want to carpool to the restaurant, I suggest
parking at a restaurant such as Threadgills along
Riverside Drive, where it is well-lit, then carpooling
back to Cesar Chavez St. Just be sure we know to
save seats for you.
Directions: To
Town Lake Park
heading east under IH 35 along Lady Bird Lake. You are on Festival Beach Rd./Nash
Hernandez St. After you pass Chicon St., Nash Hernandez St. comes to an end
at the park. Here are Mapquest directions:

Saturday
February 7 Pedernales
Falls State Park Hike 10am TOWN
members, friends, & family invited.
Howdy Wonderful
Women of TOWN,
I will be leading a hike in the beautiful Pedernales Falls State Park. We will
hike the seven mile Wolf Mountain Trail. During the hike we will stop for a
snack/lunch break along the trail. You will provide your own food and water.
Trail
Information: Pedernales Falls is a favorite
for family hikes, with a duck pond, a quarter-mile
nature trail to a scenic overlook of Twin Falls
and a wheelchair-friendly wildlife-viewing station.
The easy, seven-mile Wolf Mountain Trail wraps around
Tobacco and Wolf mountains, winding along the small
canyons reated by Mescal and Tobacco creeks. Stop
to cool your heels at Arrowhead Pool, where Bee
Creek spills into stair-stepped pools.
Meeting
Time and Place: We will meet at 10:00 am
in the parking lot by the Wolf Mountain Trail head.
From the headquarters building take the first right,
that will lead you the parking lot. I will be wearing
my brown TOWN t-shirt and a red ball cap.

Things
to Bring: Water, snack foods, sunscreen,
camera, comfortable hiking shoes, dress in layers,
who knows what the weather will be like and anything
you think you might need that’s not listed. Car
Pooling: Feel free to arrange your own
car pooling with your friends and family.
Point of contact for this event Vanessa.
Sunday
February 8 Hike
the Hill of Life 10am Everyone
is invited including well-behaved dogs.
Join Janet
and me on the Barton Creek Greenbelt to tackle the
Hill of Life (isn't it also referred to as Cardiac
Hill?). All people and well-behaved dogs are welcome
to join us, although the Hill is a little steep, so
small kids, people with bad knees, and geriatric dogs
should seriously think about their fitness level.
Let me put it this way, if you have ever used an inhaler,
you should bring one with you.
Bring: Water, snacks, inhalers, hat,
sunscreen, sturdy shoes, walking stick, and anything
else you normally keep in your backpack for hiking.
Time & Length: The nice thing
about the Greenbelt is that it has 8 miles of trails...technically.
There are a lot of side trails to explore, hopefully
Janet will remind me to take my shiny new GPS unit
so I can set a waypoint. I'm thinking 2 hours or
so of hiking should be good.
Terrain: Hilly right at the beginning
for a little bit, nothing too scary.
Intensity: Not for seriously out
of shape people, normal out of shape is okay. It
is always a good idea to know ones limitations.
If you want to explore the Greenbelt, but are unsure
if you can handle it, call me and we can discuss
the issue.
Getting There: From Mopac (Loop
1) and Capital of Texas HWY (360), head North on
360. Turn left on Scottish Woods Trail and follow
until the road ends in a T. Park in this residential
area and walk back up to the T. Veer off to the
right and the entrance to the infamous "Hill
of Life" is a short walk up on the left. We
will meet everyone at the entrance.
Let's get out and do a little hiking this weekend! Email or call me directly
to let me know that you are coming: Jenn.
If Vanessa doesn't run you ragged out at Pedernales State Park on Saturday,
join us for a walk on the gem of the Austin trail system: the Barton Creek
Greenbelt.
Thursday
February 19 Board
Meeting 6pm
The
TOWN board meets upstairs at Central Market on N. Lamar.
Email Jacque if
there is a specific topic you would like to bring to
the board's attention.
Sunday
February 22 Hike
the Barton Creek - Off the Beaten Path 10:30
am
Where: Twin
Falls entrance to the greenbelt.
Who: No
young kids or geriatric dogs for this one, please.
Anyone else is welcome, provided they play well with
others.
Directions: From
the intersection of Loop 1 (Mopac), and Loop 360 (Capitol
Of Texas Highway), go south bound on the frontage
road of Mopac. Do NOT enter the freeway. Stay on the
feeder road and park on the right just prior to the
road making it’s u-turn back under the highway.
The trailhead is obvious.
Intensity: This
is a fairly easy walk; a bit of up and down, and rocks
and what not, but nothing that requires the use of
your hands to assist. I think most folks who are reasonably
healthy could do this
Length: I
think this is maybe 3-5 miles round trip.
What to bring: All the usual things
you need to make you happy. Water, snacks, walking
stick etc.
Contact Nance for
questions or to rsvp.
Tuesday

ourselves we will explore the cave. The cave will take about 40 to 50 minutes.

nice weather :O)

popsicles for refreshing afternoon treats (not sure
of the cost for that so bring a little extra cash
if that sounds appealing). This TOWN outing is open
to everyone, so feel free to bring friends, family,
and the kiddos but no dogs are allowed on the farm.

to RoxAnn at
if you are interested in going.
COST: Your
only cost will be the fruit you pick and your boxes.
The Strawberries and Blackberries are $2.50 per pound.
The boxes cost 50 cents each, once you have purchased
a box, you can bring that box back to the patch time
and time again at no charge (except for your berries
of course). At the checkout counter we will subtract
the container weight so you are charged only for the
weight of the fruit. There is no minimum or maximum
amount of fruit you have to pick but you will be responsible
for what you do pick. Cash or checks only, they do
not accept credit cards.
HAYFIELD
MAZE: For a little more fun, there is a
cool walking maze in their hayfield that we could
enjoy, for those interested. The 'Texas' maze has
an entry fee of $6 per person ages 6 and up. Children
5 and under are free but must be accompanied by
an adult. Each pedestrian, 6 yrs old and up, finding
all destinations will receive a free soda or water
when exiting the Maze.
DIRECTIONS: For
those who are interested, we can meet at the intersection
of Hwy 620 and Hwy 71 and carpool or convoy over to
Marble Falls. Please RSVP for the exact parking location
and departure time.
From
North Austin, Burnet, Bertram, or Liberty Hill -
Starting with North Austin, take 183 north to Hwy
29, left on 29 through Liberty Hill, Bertram and
Burnet. In Burnet turn left onto Hwy 281 and travel
south to Marble Falls. In Marble Falls turn right
onto Hwy 1431 and follow directions just like 'From
Marble Falls'.
Or you can take the scenic route from Cedar Park. This way is about 15 mins
shorter but much windier; go west on 1431 off of 183. Stay on 1431 all the
way through Marble Falls and out the other side. Turn right on FM 1980 (at
red light), travel 1.2 miles to patch on right.
From
South Austin area - you will need to get
on Hwy 71 west out of Austin proper. From Oak Hill
you will travel west on 71 through Bee Caves, past
Spicewood and on to the intersection of 71 and 281.
It is about 25 - 30 miles from Bee Caves to the
intersection of 281 and 71. Exit off of 71 onto
281 North, travel about 5 miles into Marble Falls.
After crossing the bridge, you will need to turn
left at the 5th red light. This light is at the
intersection of 281 and 1431. After turning left
onto 1431, travel west out of town. About 1.5 miles
out of Marble Falls you will come to a red light
out in the middle of nowhere. Turn right onto Fm
1980 and travel about 1.2 miles to the patch.

Sunday
March 22 Hike and Bike
Play Day at Reimers Ranch 11 am $8
per car to get into the park, so carpool if you
can. Cancelled
Join me
for mountain biking, hiking, relax by the river, whatever
you want. I don’t know this park nearly as well
as I know the Barton Creek Greenbelt. This event will
be more of a group discovery experience. Let’s
get out and share an adventure!
WHO: Any
one is welcome for this play day. We can each pick
out our own intensity of experience. I think they
are fairly strict about dogs on leashes, so mine will
be staying home. If you plan to come for the bike
ride, please make sure your bike/skills are appropriate
for true off-road riding. Hybrid bikes will likely
break. The picnicking, hiking, etc, should be fine
for almost anyone.
WHERE: Travis
County Milton Reimers Ranch Park is approximately
30 miles southwest of Austin. Take Highway 71 west
of Austin through the town of Bee Cave and turn left
onto FM 3238 (Hamilton Pool Road). Travel 12 miles
to the Park entrance, on your right.
INTENSITY: I
think there are roughly 18 miles of mountain biking
trails. Some of those are too difficult, but many
are within range. Personally, I’ve ridden the “easy” route,
and it was very nice and very easy, 7 miles, if memory
serves. I think there are also intermediate and advanced
versions. I’d like to try the intermediate,
but have zero interest in the advanced.
HIKING: There
is also hiking to be done. Bonnie and I hiked down
one small canyon and it was really nice, but it was
also kind of tough going. In places, the use of all
4 limbs was necessary.
PICNIC: I
know they have a picnic area, but I haven’t
personally been there. Again, let’s go check
it all out and have some fun.
LENGTH: I’m
gonna leave the day open for this one. Stay as long
as you like, play as hard as you like.
Bring whatever you need to feel happy.
Please contact Nance if you plan
to attend or want more information.

Happy Mother's Day to All, and let's try again.
I'd like to meet at the 360 Bridge, again, and try to go across the river (with everyone else too this time :))and up Bull Creek to 2222. It really is pretty and peaceful (minus the wind!) with lots of birds, turtles and nice backyards.
We'll need to meet earlier, at 9am and not stay out so long. I have to go out of town after noon, so I'd like to be back to the dock around 11:30. If everyone else would like to stay/meet for lunch, that would be great, but I'll have to get on the road.

Sunday
- Saturday
May 17 - 23 Palo
Duro/Caprock Canyons Camping Trip
This
trip is open to TOWN members and guests, including pets.
Do
you want to get away from it all? Go somewhere that
I like to refer as “the middle of nowhere”?
Hear the coyotes howl and see a billion stars at
night? Please come join me in the Panhandle
of Texas and camp in Caprock Canyons and
Palo Duro State Parks.
Schedule:
Arriving Caprock Canyons the afternoon of Sunday,
May 17th
Leaving Caprock and driving 90+ miles to Palo Duro
On Wed, May 20th – camping there until Sunday,
May 23rd.
Caprock
Canyons: It is near Quitaque, TX, northeast
of Lubbock. There are several sections in the
park to
camp, whether
with your RV, tent, and even a separate campground
for horses. Caprock Canyons has several nice hiking
trails
and a small lake with catfish and bass. There
is also the Trailway, a 64-mile hike, bike &/or
horse trail. This trail has the last active railroad
tunnel
in Texas.
There is remote camping along the trailway with
water in several places. Entrance fee is $3/day and
camping
fees range from $8-$20/night.
Palo Duro: Is known as “the
Grand Canyon of Texas” and
is really a great state park. There are quite
a few hiking trails – one is 11 miles long.
There are some really neat rock formations on
some of the hikes
(i.e., the Lighthouse). Palo Duro also has 4 4-person
cabins on the “rim” as well as some
in “Cow
Camp”. Entrance fee for Palo Duro is $4/day
unless you have a parks pass. Camping fees range
from $12-22/night.
The cabins range from $60/$125 night. There is
also a deposit required of $50 for the cabins.
One morning or afternoon while at Palo Duro,
I plan on visiting the Panhandle Plains Historical
Museum
in Canyon. Admission to the museum is $10.
Website: http://www.panhandleplains.org/index.html.
In May, there should be wildflowers blooming
(yes – even
in the Panhandle), and the weather will still be cool.
When I went there 2 years ago (also in May), the days
were between 50-75 degrees and nights were still maybe
in the 40s-50s. (It had snowed the week before I arrived.)
Regardless of the weather, I’m planning
on loading up the back of the truck with firewood.
This area is really a beautiful part of Texas
and the landscape is completely different
than around
Austin.
I hope you’ll take the
long 8-10 hour trip and join me!
Please
RSVP if you
plan on joining
me! Gloria

May 23 Round Rock Express Game 7pm Everyone is invited: family, friends, neighbors... no pets please. Cost: The Berm seating (outfield lawn) is $6, and parking is $5.
Please join Jenn, Jessie and me (JanetC) for a great night of baseball at the Dell Diamond. The Round Rock Express will be challenging the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Colorado Rockies farm team). Even if baseball is not your thing how can you not like a place that features popcorn, peanuts, cotton candy, hot dogs the size of a Chihuahua, snow cones, hamburgers and ...well, of course beer?
What to bring: No chairs, that have legs, are allowed ... you can bring stadium seats, the legless chairs with back support, but nothing that will elevate you. Bring a blanket or towel, hat, glove (for one of the many home runs by the Express sure to come our way, okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration) and money. Since you can't bring any food or drink, you must buy them.
Getting there:
FROM I-35 NORTH (from Austin)
· Exit 253 (HWY 79/Taylor)
· Turn RIGHT onto Highway 79
· Drive 3.5 miles East
· The Dell Diamond will be located on your left
Don’t miss out on a great night of fun filled lawn lounging, baseball, and good food. The Express’ website: www.roundrockexpress.com. Courtesy of Jenn’s infinite knowledge of all things “if you are thinking of buying tickets for an actual seat, the third base side is in the shade the entire game.”
Please email me directly if you are planning to attend so I know who to expect: JanetC.
Sunday
May 24 Hiking at Brushy Creek 9am Everyone (that can make 5 miles - probably better to leave the little kids at home) is invited including well - behaved dogs on a leash.
Hello TOWNies! Join CarolH and me on a walk on the north side and experience the Brushy Creek Trail. This is a 5 mile round trip walk (out and back) and we will start early enough to avoid the hot sun.

What to bring: Sunscreen, hat, water, snacks, sturdy shoes, watermelon, gps (any geocaching?)...anything else you want to carry.
Terrain/Difficulty: This is a flat trail (similar to the Hike & Bike) that has a little uphill climb at the end. The only difficulty will be if you are not used to walking 5 miles. This will not be a hard walk.
Time: I have never been on this trail, so I will guess about 2.5 hours. We'll probably stop and rest (actually, as often as needed) at the halfway turnaround point, and we will not be power walking...I am notoriously slow.
Getting there: From IH-35 in Round Rock, head west on RR 620. Turn right onto Great Oaks Drive. At the intersection of Great Oaks and Brushy Creek Road park in the spaces available in the southwest corner.

She spreads "Bluebirds Across Texas … one nestbox at a time" through a weekly local newspaper column. Pauline will talk about "Managing for Bluebirds" which will include how to: locate, create, and enhance bluebird habitat in Central Texas; wisely select and easily install bluebird nestboxes in Central Texas in a manner that will attract various native species; monitor and report through Cornell's "NestWatch" program; recognize nests and eggs; and manage predators and problems (including House Sparrows). Join us to learn more from Pauline - a super source.

The pool trail is 1/4 mile in length and includes a series of rock steps descending into the canyon. Sturdy footgear is recommended. Visitors with physical disabilities can be accommodated by prearranging assistance. Please call prior to your visit.

Hamilton Pool is approximately 30 miles southwest of Austin. Take Highway 71 west of Austin through the town of Bee Cave and turn left onto FM 3238 (Hamilton Pool Road). Travel 13 miles to the Preserve entrance, on your right.
The Preserve opens at 9am and closes at 6pm. You can stay as long as you like, but my family will be leaving around noon or 1pm. Keep my cell phone number handy in case you need to get a hold of me: 665.8113. Let me know if you would like to join us and I will put you on my handy dandy list!

July 18 Round Rock Express Game 7pm Everyone is invited: family, friends, neighbors... no pets please.
Let’s try this again minus the thunder and lightening that cancelled us last time.
Please join Jenn, Jessie and me (JanetC) for a great night of baseball at the Dell Diamond.
The Round Rock Express will be challenging the Oklahoma City Redhawks (Texas Rangers farm team). Even if baseball is not your thing how can you not like a place that features popcorn, peanuts, cotton candy, hot dogs the size of a Chihuahua, snow cones, hamburgers and ...well, of course beer?
Cost: The Berm seating (outfield lawn) is $6, and parking is $5.
What to bring: No chairs, that have legs, are allowed...you can bring stadium seats, the legless chairs with back support, but nothing that will elevate you. Bring a blanket or towel, hat, glove (for one of the many home runs by the Express sure to come our way, okay that might be a bit of an exaggeration) and money. Since you can't bring any food or drink, you must buy them.
Getting there:
FROM I-35 NORTH (from Austin)
· Exit 253 (HWY 79/Taylor)
· Turn RIGHT onto Highway 79
· Drive 3.5 miles East
· The Dell Diamond will be located on your left
Don’t miss out on a great night of fun filled lawn lounging, baseball, and good food. The Express’ website: www.roundrockexpress.com. Let’s get there a little early to be sure and grab lawn seating in the shade! Courtesy of Jenn’s infinite knowledge of all things “if you are thinking of buying tickets for an actual seat, the third base side is in the shade the entire game.”
Please email me/JanetC directly if you are planning to attend so I know who to expect.
Saturday

Howdy Walkers, come join us down south for a stroll in the beautiful little park called Mary Moore Searight.
What to bring: Water, hat, sunscreen, snacks, sturdy shoes...the usual.
Getting there: From I-35 in south Austin, exit onto Slaughter Lane and head west. After a couple of turns in the road look for Yarsa Blvd. or Palace Parkway on the right. That's your key to prepare to turn left, immediately after some apartments that abut the park entrance. The parking area is quite a distance back, past the radio controlled plane airport.
Email Jenn directly so she know to look for you. This will be a very easy stroll that will take us a couple of hours. This is not a walk for people looking for a serious workout...just a stroll, good conversation and a chance to see the great outdoors.

path through the wilderness. Hot springs, dry springs, blow-downs, and the
generosity of strangers have all added to the unpredictability of this unique Appalachian Trail

August 4 Old Settler's Park Evening Stroll 5:30 pm at Old Settler's Park in Round Rock Everyone is invited.
An Innocent Stroll -- come join me in Old Settler's Park, Palm Valley Blvd/79, Round Rock to walk the lovely one-mile lower loop of this all-paved trail.
It is sheer coincidence that this will be the very same evening that Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and John Mellencamp will be appearing at Dell Diamond, and that the trail passes right behind the stadium at one point. I have no idea whether or not the trail will be blocked off that evening, so be ready to be disappointed if this would be your only reason for enjoying a nice evening walk.
Meet me by my little white Outback at the playscape on Whitlow Way, off of Harrel Pwky in Old Settler's. There are back entrances if you want to avoid all the concert traffic. What heat? RSVP to Nancy.
Friday - Sunday
August 7 - 9 Camping at Guadalupe River State Park Anyone who can join us is welcome. Cancelled due to high temperatures and dry river.

Dear TOWNies, let's beat the heat this Saturday and have some laughs while watching the movie, "Julie and Julia." I've tried to pick a location that is kind of central. Please respond to LisaW if you plan to join us so we can all sit together. I recommended purchasing your tickets on-line and arriving about 15 minutes early. Hope to see you there.
Tuesday - Saturday Camping at South Llano River State Park Anyone who can join us is welcome. Cancelled due to high temperatures and dry river.
Saturday
August 15 Krause Springs - Swimming and Pot Luck This is a woman only event. No men or children allowed. They do not allow any dogs in the park. Park admission is $5/person, cash only.
You are welcome to bring friends and new recruits for TOWN. We are also inviting all the other TOWN chapters to join us.
Krause Springs is a well-known swimming site located in Spicewood, approximately 30 miles west of Austin. The 115 acre property is listed on the National Registry of Historical Sites and has been privately owned by the Krause Family for over 50 years. It's a refreshing treat to swim in the Springs during the hot summers of Texas!
There are 32 springs on the property, and several feed the man-made pool then go over a cliff into a waterfall down into the natural swimming hole below, complete with rope swing. Guests are also welcome to relax and to stroll through the Butterfly Gardens and take time to listen to the music of the wind chimes and the fountains.
GENERAL PLAN FOR THE DAY: We will meet at 11:30 for a potluck picnic, so bring whatever dish you would like to share. After everyone arrives and gets settled, we will dive into our great lunch. There are plenty of shade trees so that makes the lunch so much more pleasant and enjoyable.
I will furnish the paper plates, napkins, plasticware, and a cold watermelon for a mid-afternoon snack. Please bring your own drinks for the day. Alcohol is allowed, but absolutely no glass containers.
After we finish eating, we will pack up the food and go for a short hike around the area then swim and hang out in the water for the rest of the afternoon. We will probably call it a day around 5 pm and take a short stroll through the gardens before leaving.
For those who might be interested, we usually go to Rosie's Tamale House afterwards for dinner. This restaurant allows you to bring in your own cooler of beer if you want. (They do not serve any alcohol - just tea, soda and water). The food is delicious, the prices are very reasonable, and the atmosphere very casual.
WHAT TO BRING: This park is very rocky and some areas are slick, especially next to the water, so please wear old tennis shoes or water shoes that have good traction on the bottom. That will help so much when getting in and out of the natural swimming hole, plus just hiking around the area. There are cliffs throughout the area, as well as snakes, so you will want to watch your step and be alert to your surroundings (closed toed shoes are highly recommended). We have never seen a snake in all of our prior events here but that doesn't mean we can afford to not be cautious. A walking stick can be very helpful when maneuvering through some of the rocky or steep hiking areas.
Please bring your swimsuit, lawn chair, hat, sunscreen, ice chest, camera, towels, a floatie for the water, and anything else you need to be comfortable. There is no store at the park.
CARPOOLING: For those that want to carpool, we will meet at 10:45 am at Springhill Restaurant on the corner of Hwy 620 and Hwy 71. Park at the back of the parking lot away from traffic. We will load up and take off by 11am. Please also bring a couple of dollars to assist with carpool costs.
PLEASE RSVP to RoxAnn for questions or if you plant to attend. We need to know who is coming and how many, please. This is going to be so much fun, really hope everyone can come and join us!

in conference room 225 of the LCRA Redbud Center. August 29 Black 'N BlueTour at Blue Hole in Wimberly This is open to everyone, so feel free to bring the whole family. However, dogs are not allowed in this park. Park admission at Blue Hole is $6/person or $3/person if you are over 60. Movie admission is $5/person. Canceled due to low water level.
Events: The Black 'N Blue Tour in Wimberley starts off with a picnic at Blue Hole, followed by swimming and lounging around under the shade trees. Blue Hole is one of the best loved natural swimming holes in Texas. It is surrounded by 126 acres of natural forests and native grass fields.
And it sounds like they have finished building the Cypress Creek Nature Trail so bring your hiking shoes if you want to hike a little after swimming.
About 2:30 or so, those who are interested can go shopping over on the square (just a few blocks away). There are so many cool and unique shops in Wimberley but they are only open until 5 pm.
Then at 5:30, we will meet at a local restaurant (to be determined later) for dinner all together. We have done this several times and never had bad service or bad food. Just before dark, we will head over to the Corral Theater for an outdoor movie on the big screen (movie schedule is not posted for August yet but will let all those who RSVP know asap).
This is one of the most fun events of the year, so really hope everyone can join us!
CONTEST: So we will be out after dark (thus the Black) and we will be swimming in the clear waters of Blue Hole (thus the Blue). If you want to have some extra fun, wear something that is black and blue and you could win a super cool prize! Ask anyone who attended this event last time we had the contest and you will definitely want to win the prize for most original (it's something really cool!) We will have the contest first thing before lunch.
WHAT TO BRING: Everyone will be responsible for bringing their own picnic and drinks for the day. No potluck this time. Bring blanket to spread out on and/or lawn chairs, hat, sunscreen, camera, floatie for the water, and anything else you need to be comfortable.
Park admission at Blue Hole is $6/person or $3/person if you are over 60. Movie admission is $5/person.
CARPOOLING: For those interested in carpooling to Wimberley, we will meet at 10:15am at Springhill Restaurant at the intersection of Hwy 620 and Hwy 71. Park at the back of the parking lot. We will load up and take off by 10:30am. For those staying for the movie, I'm guessing we should be back to Austin between 10:30 and 11pm at the latest. Please bring a few extra dollars to assist with carpool costs.

September 4 - 7 Camping at Fort Davis State Park and Balloon Bash in Alpine Anyone who can join us is welcome.
Here are details about our upcoming camping trip. First of all, I still do not know if I am camping in an RV or a tent...but be sure to make your reservations at Ft. Davis State Park if you want to join us. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/davis_mountains/
On Saturday AM, we will head out early to get to the lift off area for the hot air balloons...it is a spectacular sight to see all the color against the mountains on a clear morning. We will park the cars, and walk around watching each balloon take off. Link to the website for the balloon event follows (there has not been a charge to get in when I have gone before, so I am assuming this year will be free, too.
http://www.bigbendballoonbash.com/
We will probably stop by a really cool shop with beautiful crafts from Mexico while we are in Alpine, get some lunch and return to the park for a nap.
Saturday nite, we will be going to McDonald Observatory for the twilight program and the star gazing program (costs and details on link below). This is an incredible experience if you have not had a chance to go...First of all, the temps are much cooler at the higher elevation, we will probably see an awesome sunset, and their talks are very informative...at the end of the programs, you walk from telescope to telescope seeing the different objects they are focused on.
http://mcdonaldobservatory.org/visitors/programs/#starpartypass
On Sunday, we may decide to venture into Big Bend to hike...depending on energy, temps etc.
Even if we just hang out around Ft. Davis State Park, there are very pretty places to hike there.
Monday we will head back...those that are interested might want to plan to stop off at Balmorhea State park to swim in the spring fed pool.
I do not know yet what time I personally will be leaving to head west ... I might even head out Thursday nite, to cut the drive in half. (I am taking a vacation day on Friday.)
For questions or to RSVP, please contact Dawn.

September 18 - 20 2009 Hummer/Bird Celebration Rockport TX This activity is open to women, men, children and pets.
From celebration coordinators: The threat of Hurricane Ike forced cancellation of our 20th annual 2008 Hummer/Bird Celebration. Fortunately for us Ike did not make landfall in our area, however our hearts go out to those on the upper Texas coast who were directly affected by the storm.
We’re now delighted to report that all our scheduled 2008 speakers plan to speak at this year’s 2009 Hummer/Bird Celebration, so you won’t miss a thing. We do anticipate some exciting new changes in our Hummer/Bird Mall and speaker venues. We will update this website as plans progress so check in periodically.
Thank you for your attendance and support at our past Hummer/Bird Celebrations. We hope you will join us again this year to enjoy seeing Ruby-throated Hummingbirds gathering in our community this fall.
From outing leader:
Speaker and Activity Schedule are listed below:
http://www.rockporthummingbird.com/2009speakerschedule.pdf
Price of the different activities offered:
http://www.rockporthummingbird.com/2009advregistration.pdf
I will be participating in the Hummingbird Hummer Home Bus Trip and a Boat Birding Trip and going individually to a couple of the speakers. Those of you interested in doing any of these activities, send me a schedule of the times you want to go and I will coordinate with others so that we can be together on some of these activities.
Places to stay listed below:
http://www.rockport-fulton.org/frames/stay.asp
I would like to get some feed back even if it is tentative as to who would be interested in coming and if you are camping or wanting lodging. It will help me determine if we should pick a place with lodging and camping so we could all be together. That would be my personal preference but I am open to everyone picking where they want to stay. If you are bringing a pet, you will be responsible for finding lodging that accommodates the pet.
Friday Night we will have a pot luck gathering at a predetermined place once I get more feed back from those of you who are attending. After the potluck, anyone who is interested can join up with me to go pier fishing.
Other activities besides the humming bird celebration will include eating supper Saturday night at a predetermine restaurant decided upon with the group on Friday night. We will also go over to the Port A side to go boogie boarding if the surf is right.
If anyone is interested in leading a kayaking activity or just participating, please contact Paulette.

November 15 Hiking at St. Ed's City Park 10am TOWN women and canines invited.
Howdy Hikers! Let's go check out St Ed's park together. I have been out to St. Ed's a couple of times now and I am very impressed with this park.
Bring sturdy walking/hiking shoes, water, snacks, hat, walking stick, sunscreen ... the usual stuff.
The park consists of two parts, one park and one preserve. The portion of the park on the north side of Bull Creek resides within the City of Austin parks system. South of the creek, the park operates under the somewhat more stringent rules of the Balcones Canyonland Preserve system, which among other things mandates that dogs be on leashes.
Getting there: The park resides on both sides of Bull Creek along Spicewood Springs Road west of Capital of Texas Highway. There are two parking areas for the park. From Hwy 360, take Spicewood Springs west for about two miles. Be on the lookout on the left for a small parking area to the left with a white mailbox. At this spot there is parking for at most 4-5 cars parked parallel to the road. Alternatively, proceed down Spicewood Springs for at most a quarter mile and look for a larger parking area on the left. This parking area can hold about 15 cars. We will meet at this second parking area.
Duration: Probably around 2-2.5 hours.
Length: 3 miles, roughly
Intensity: Some ups and downs, nothing too strenuous. Generally not for beginners, but if you are in okay shape, I wouldn't worry.

- Sunday November 17 - 22 Festival of the Cranes Socorro, NM Everyone is invited. This event has been cancelled.
Hi, ladies: I propose this trip to replace a Big Bend outing. Let me know if I should place you on "the list."
This outing is to the enchanting Festival of the Cranes in Socorro, NM, celebrating the annual migration of the sandhill cranes and thousands of other birds.
The Fest is from Nov. 17-22 and is held at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.
Please check out last fall's website for sample programs, http://www.friendsofthebosque.org/crane/index.html
I was in the Socorro area many years ago when the festival was about to begin, and I was astounded by the number of waterbirds in these marshy plains of the Rio Grande River. Socorro is a gorgeous sandstone redrock area, and there may be lots of additional outdoor activities we could enjoy.
I will send registration information in September--the folks there are not prepared to hear from us, yet! At that later date I will find out more about registering as a group and details you may need. Looks like the costs will vary a lot depending on which workshops you sign up for and how many days and meals you plan to enjoy.
I will take my Casita and leave Austin on Friday the 13th and probably spend 2 or 3 nights getting there, arriving at Bird Watchers RV Park on Nov. 17-20 (4 nights). My original dates were incorrect. I will drive home again before Thanksgiving.

November 27 - 29 Renaissance Festival Outing This event is open to everyone, but please see details below. No pets allowed.
It is time for the Renaissance Festival again. Tickets at the gate are $21.00 or you can buy advanced tickets for $16.00 before September 25 at this link http://www.texrenfest.com/home.html . You can also purchase tickets locally at HEB and Randalls for $19.00.
This weekend is Celtic Christmas Weekend. I will be going to the festival on Friday and Saturday. There is a special price of $12.00 for Friday if you order online or by phone. At the gate the tickets are $23.00. If you purchase your tickets by September 25th, they are $16.00.
The whole festival is themed in the Old St. Nicholas Christmas theme and it quite beautiful. See the link I have enclosed below for all of the activities.
During the day this is a kid friendly event. Towards the evening you will see more risqué costumes and behavior so I just want you to be aware.
For those who want lodging in a motel/hotel check out the link as there is a list with phone numbers that you can call to make reservations. This is a very popular event as people from Oklahoma and Louisiana attend. So I suggest you make reservations early, you can always cancel them.
Camping: Is on site and is first come first serve. You are camping in large fields that are relatively flat. No reservations required and the cost is $20.00 per vehicle for the whole weekend (Fri, Sat and Sun night). There is no electricity, water or dump stations available. This is why I chose this date because it should be cool at night. Tents and campers allowed and you can run a generator if you choose. Some people sleep out in the open under the stars. Porta Potties are available. There is a Quick Mart in the camping area where you can buy ice, drinks and snacks.
I will be arriving Thursday after lunch to set up my camper. I will mark out an area so we can all try to camp together. I will be camping near the Fire Ring. This area can be noisy at night as people party into the early hours of the morning. My suggestion is to bring ear plugs to sleep if noise bothers you or there is a quiet/family side (which I find interesting since it is next to the rail road track and there will be 3 trains the come rumbling through each night) but it is away from the party area.
Please RSVP to Paulette if you are coming, your cell number and if you are camping or coming for the day. Please let me know if you have any questions. Saturday night we will be having Chicken and Sausage gumbo around the campfire after our fun day.
Things that you can bring if you are camping, firewood, tiki torches, mosquito repellant, all food and drink, costume, chairs, alcohol is allowed, trash bags, portable table.

December 19 Hike at Wild Basin Preserve 10am (hike for several hours) TOWN women invited. Sorry, no pets allowed.
Hey hikers, I hope you’ll join me for a hike through the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve. TOWN women are welcome on this hike whether you are new to hiking or are a seasoned trailsmith. I have enjoyed this close to home hike many times. The Wild Basin offers a wide variety of plant life and terrain within its 227 acres. You will enjoy views of Bee Creek, portions of the Black-Capped Vireo Preserve, and extensive interpretive information. There’s also a waterfall and a couple of creek crossings.
How to Find Wild Basin Preserve: The entrance to Wild Basin is on the east side of Loop 360 (805 N. Capital of Texas Highway). Entrance is approximately 1 mile north of Bee Caves Road, or approximately 3 miles south of the Loop 360 bridge over Lake Austin (Colorado River). See Map
Parking: As you drive into the Preserve, there are several small parking areas on the right and more spaces on the left as you get closer to the trail head. The parking area is not huge, but I have never had a problem finding a parking space. After you park, lets meet on the porch at the entrance to the Environmental Education Center.
What to bring: hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes, water, hat, walking stick, sunscreen, bug repellent, binoculars, camera, and any other favorite hiking gear. The park does not allow pets or picnics, so please leave your dog at home this time and plan to have lunch somewhere else after the hike.
Length: 2.5 miles, roughly
Hiking Time: About 2 hours
Difficulty: Moderate. There are some ups and downs and some creek crossings but nothing too difficult as long as you wear sturdy shoes. The trails are maintained very well.
Fees: $3 per adult, $2 for Seniors. Fees are collected in a box at the trailhead, based on the honor system. You can also visit the Environmental Education Center during operating hours and pay your fee there. Fees are waived if you have an active Wild Basin membership.
Other Info: Bottled water is available for purchase in the Environmental Education Center. Portable restrooms are located in the parking area; no picnic facilities are available. Leave all plants, animals, rocks, and other elements in place. Everything is protected on the preserve.

Follow Stratford until you come to the MoPac overpass. Park in the lot and meet up where the trail starts across the footbridge (south side) over the Colorado River.

Participants, however, can chose their own distance by crossing over to the north side of the Lake at the Pfluger Bridge, the Congress Avenue bridge, the Congress Avenue bridge or the IH-35 bridge and return to the start point. Distances are shown on the attached map.
