Kayak Paddles
- Wednesday evenings -
6:00
pm
If you
kayak with TOWN-Austin on Wednesday evenings, you must wear
a PFD/lifejacket.
Wednesday evening paddles will begin March 23rd. It's spring and time for Wednesday evening kayaking! No kayaker will be left behind during these paddling outings. Meet at the Rowing Dock located at 2418 Stratford Drive in Zilker Park. Kayak rental is $10/evening and that's a bargain. Visit their website at http://www.rowingdock.com/ .
Check calendar date for specifics and leader contact information.
You can bring your own kayak or rent. If you prefer to put in behind Austin High School, just paddle across the lake to join the women at the Rowing Dock who are renting.
We will try to have a leader every Wednesday, but kayaking will not be cancelled if there is not a designated leader. All Wednesday kayakers will try to stay together and arrive back at the dock together in case anyone needs assistance.
FEBRUARY
Friday - Sunday,
February 2 - 6 Camping at Inks Lake State Park All TOWN members and their guests and well behaved dogs, flying squirrels, and children invited.
What: 3- or 4-day camping
Where: Inks Lake State Park, between Marble Falls and Burnet, 3630 Park Road 4 West
Burnet TX 78611, Phone 512/793-2223 (Inks Lake Website)
Campsite Reservations
Make your reservations for camping with TPWD online at http://texas.reserveworld.com/, or by phone at (512) 389-8900. You cannot reserve a certain campsite in advance. If you pay for all of your nights in advance, however, when I arrive on Thursday I can get you a spot near me and request that our group is together. The campground will fill up quickly. On Dec. 11 there were still over 100 campsites still available, but you should decide in the next few days.
Tent campers are welcome to split sites with the “electric people,” just let us know you’re planning to come and tent with us so we can suggest pairings. That means you will not need a separate reservation and will share costs with your rv buddy.
Will confirm matchmaking arrangements 2 weeks before.
Inks Lake
Inks is one of the busiest and largest state parks I have camped in. The lake level is kept constant, and we can kayak from our campsites. We usually lock up our yaks at one campsite on the water. The Park is also a great site for biking and hiking. We will hope to have campfires, so please plan to help with fuel. Will confirm that as well.
Some indoor pursuits may include Blue Bonnet Café in Marble Falls, for a meal or their Pie Happy Hour, and I like to get BBQ-to-go from Inman’s Ranch House for their lean turkey sausage. There is an archaeological site in Burnet (Nightengale Archaeological Center by LCRA), and a dam museum in Marble Falls. Longhorn Cavern State Park is nearby for an interesting geology excursion, and (best of all) the exclusive Perissos Winery has tastings in the afternoons for $5 a person. Other wineries are nearby, as are several other small Hill Country towns.
So we will have lots of choices, better determined a few days before, when we know what the weather will be like.
Inks Lake provides wifi service.
Pot luck or group dinner TBD.
For questions or to RSVP, contact MarilynF.
Saturday,
February 4 Hike at Inks Lake 10am
When: Saturday, Feb 4th at 10am
What: Hike at Inks Lake
Who: Everyone welcome (TOWN members & guests), including kids & pets
Outing Leader: GloriaB
Come join us for a hike at Inks Lake on Saturday, Feb 4th at 10am!
Everyone welcome (TOWN members & guests), including kids & pets (leash required in state parks). There is a fee to enter the park ($5/car) or it is free if you have a TX State Parks Pass.
Let's plan on hiking around the southern edge of the park for 2-5 miles (the Pecan Flats Trail). There will be volunteers working on the trail and depending on where they are working, we'll go the opposite way. :) The long-range forecasts looks great for next weekend!
Let's meet at the parking lot at the beginning of the trail, not far from the entrance/headquarters to the park (highlighted on the map below). Please bring a hat, sunscreen, snack, water, hiking boots and walking/hiking sticks. Bring a lunch if you'd like and we'll head to the campsite to sit in the shade after the hike. Since several TOWNies will be camping at Inks for the weekend, there may also be kayaking planned that afternoon so you may want to strap your boat to your car!
Please let me know if you'll join us &/or email me with any questions.
It if map included below doesn't come through your email, it can be found at this link: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/park_maps/pwd_mp_p4507_015k.pdf. Info about Inks Lake State Park can be found here: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/inks/
